3 Effective Ways to Memorize Scripture (And Why It's Important)

Scripture memorization seemed impossible to me when I first became a Christian. I can hardly remember important phone numbers, address, birthdays, etc., let alone long verses from sixty-six different books in the Bible. I stopped putting so much pressure on myself to memorize scripture until one day I realized that scripture memorization was something that I had experienced before before I got saved.

In 2014, I found Psalm 34:18 while scrolling through Pinterest, nursing a heartbreak and feeling sorry myself. "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those crushed in spirit."

Well, that was me. Crushed in spirit and incredibly brokenhearted. I realized that scripture memorization should mean something to me, and that's what my memory bank started to quickly fill.

Why is it important to memorize God's Word?

- It helps us teach others about God (Deut. 11:18)

- It helps us hold onto guidance and wisdom (Psalm 119:97-100)

- It keeps us from temptation (Psalm 119:9-11)

- It helps us know God's truth and identify the enemy's lies (Matt. 22:29)

Find verses that matter to you

Sometimes, we do need to memorize verses that are all-together important, like John 3:16, Isaiah 41:10, and Philippians 4:6-7. But it's also important to hold onto scripture that makes you feel closer to God or like you understand Him more. Psalm 34:18 taught me about God's character and His love for me even when I was very broken, and that's why it stuck with me all these years.

Start small

You don't have to start memorizing an entire book in the Bible. Start with a short verse that reminds you of who you in God's eyes, God's character, God's instruction, or wisdom from Jesus. Recite it in your mind, say it outloud, write it down in your journal or on random slips of paper.

Understand the verse

When choosing a verse to memorize, what helps me is first understanding what it means. The point of memorizing a verse is to always carry it with you when you need it. Use a commentary to unpack the meaning and wisdom behind the verse, so the Holy Spirit can help you recall the right verses at the right time!
